What is Sitemap?
A sitemap is a file where you can list the web pages of your site to tell Google and other search engines about your website content. Search engine web crawlers like Googlebot read this file to more intelligently crawl your website.
According to Wikipedia, The Sitemaps protocol allows a webmaster to inform search engines about URLs on a website that are available for crawling. A Sitemap is an XML file that lists the URLs for a site. It allows webmasters to include additional information about each URL: when it was last updated, how often it changes, and how important it is in relation to other URLs in the site.
This allows search engines to crawl the site more intelligently. Sitemaps are a URL inclusion protocol and complements robots.txt, a URL exclusion protocol.
Why you should submit sitemap to Google?
We already have discussed what sitemap is. Now, it is time to know “Do I really submit sitemap to Google?” or what are the benefits of it in case of SEO?
You can think of an XML Sitemap like a blueprint for your website. XML Sitemaps are important for SEO because they make it easier for Google to find your website’s post and pages—this is important because Google ranks web PAGES, not just websites.
Here are some major benefits that you will get if you submit sitemap to Google and other search engines:
- Save Time: There are some pieces of information that you have to publish when still fresh, like news items. You don’t have to wait when the Google spiders or crawler are likely to pay your website a visit. You cut on this time.
- Content Modification: You can rank higher in Google if you keep modifying content on your website. Keep it fresh and useful to your visitors. If you use sitemap, Google will get alert when you modify or update your website content.
- Efficient Crawling: Every piece of content on a website should be crawled, which sometimes may take a long time. With a sitemap, the website can be efficiently crawled on a regular basis.
- Get Discovered: The main reason we create new content on our website to get visitors. If your website is not getting found on the web, there is no chance to get visitors. When you submit sitemap to Google, people can find your content in the search engine. In this way, you will get more visitors. I will highly recommend for new websites or web pages and other pieces of content.
- Content Categorization: Sitemap will help you place web pages under categories and prioritized. This means that Google will crawl and index the pages carrying your most important content faster than those with a less priority value.
Webmasters who have installed XML sitemaps to their sitemaps enjoy many other benefits. If you are still thinking about it, consider using a sitemap.
